30 weeks pregnant

Baby Sabreen al-Sakani was one of 16 children killed in two airstrikes in Rafah last weekend. They were all killed during a bombing of the apartment building where they lived. Sabreen’s mother was seven and a half months pregnant.

The attack happened just before midnight on Saturday. The baby’s family was sleeping at the time. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were targeting Hamas fighters and infrastructure.

Emergency caesarean section

When rescuers found the woman’s body, they discovered that the baby was still alive in her mother’s womb. They rushed the unborn child to the hospital, where doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver Sabreen.

She was immediately placed in an incubator after the caesarean section. At that time her condition was already critical. She weighed only 1.4 kilograms and had severe breathing difficulties. According to the mother’s grandmother, Mirvat al-Sakani, the family planned to adopt the child. Sabreen was buried next to her mother.
