“It is not the West that should fear a confrontation with Putin, but the other way around,” the Polish Foreign Minister said during his speech in the Polish House of Commons.

Sikorski, outlining Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s views on the new government’s foreign policy, said Russia’s military and economic capacity is “dwarfed by that of the West” as NATO has three times as many military personnel has three times as many air force resources and four times as many ships as Russia.

“Putin’s only hope is our lack of resolve,” he warned. Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia has waged a hybrid war against Poland, including disinformation, Sikorski pointed an accusing finger at Moscow. He said Russia is lying when it falsely claims that Poland wants to annex parts of western Ukraine around Lviv, a region that once belonged to Poland.

“Lviv is Ukraine,” he said in Ukrainian. “Russian leaders and propagandists want to turn us against the Ukrainians,” Sikorski continued. “They will not succeed in this. They will lose on this front too.”

Sikorski’s speech outlined the new direction of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-European government, which took office in December and replaced the coalition of the ultra-conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party. Tusk and Sikorski returned to the same leadership positions they held before losing power in 2015. The government has vowed to restore democratic values that have been eroded in the meantime.
