An employee of the Belgian development agency Enabel has been killed in a bombing in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Minister for Development Cooperation Caroline Gennez (Vooruit).

“It is with deep sadness and horror that we learn of the death of our colleague Abdallah Nabhan (33) and his seven-year-old son last night after a bombardment by the Israeli army in the eastern part of the city of Rafah,” the minister’s office wrote in a statement. .

“Abdallah’s wife is in a critical condition in hospital and fighting for her life,” it said. “The couple’s two other children (aged 5 years and 7 months) suffered minor injuries. Abdullah’s father, 65, his 35-year-old brother and his six-year-old niece also lost their lives. The house where Abdallah’s family was located housed about 25 people, including residents and displaced persons seeking refuge there. The attack last night killed at least seven people and injured many others,” the government said.

“I am deeply affected by the death of our colleague and his son, and I am outraged and shocked by the continued attacks,” says Enabel general manager Jean Van Wetter. “This is yet another blatant violation by Israel of international humanitarian law. As director of a Belgian agency and as a former humanitarian worker, I cannot accept that this has continued unpunished for so long. It is tragic that innocent civilians are victims of this conflict. We must do everything we can to stop the violence.”

“Didn’t get a chance to save themselves and family”

Abdallah was among those on a list of people eligible to leave Gaza, according to Gennez. “This list was provided to the Israeli authorities months ago. Yet he was not given the chance to save himself and his family,” Gennez said. She points to the “crushing” responsibility of the Israeli government. “The bombing of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians violates all international, humanitarian and war laws,” it said.

Minister Gennez and Enabel condemn “the attack on innocent civilians” “in the strongest terms” and ask that the other seven Enabel colleagues who are still in Gaza are immediately allowed to leave.

Minister Lahbib also states that bombing civilian areas and populations is contrary to international law. “I summon Israel’s ambassador to condemn this unacceptable act and demand an explanation,” the minister said.
