The blades of the legendary cabaret theater Moulin Rouge crashed in Paris last night. The facade of the building in the tourist district of Pigalle also suffered damage, but according to the fire brigade there were no casualties.

The incident occurred between 2 and 3 a.m., various French media report. The facade of the iconic building was also damaged. The first three letters also crashed. There would be no further risk of collapse.

The broken wings of the Moulin Rouge were still covered with a green tarp early Thursday morning. A security perimeter was set up around the accident site before the wings were removed around 8 a.m., reports BFMtv.

Weekly check

“This is the first time an accident of this type has occurred since its creation on October 6, 1889,” a source close to Moulin Rouge told AFP Thursday morning. “Fortunately it happened after closing time,” said the same source, who pointed out that the cabaret’s technical management checks the blade mechanism every week. No problems have been noticed so far.

The only serious accident to have occurred at Cancan’s temple was a fire caused by construction work in 1915, which forced it to close for nine years, the cabaret believes.

The famous establishment at the foot of the Butte Montmartre, synonymous with the wild Parisian nights of the Lido and the cancan dancers, and where thousands of visitors pose for photos every day, celebrates its 135th anniversary on October 6.
