An estimated 160 pilot whales are stranded in western Australia. An operation has been launched to save the animals. The pilot whales landed on or close to a beach at Marybrook, approximately 180 kilometers south of Perth in Western Australia. Some have died quickly and some are dying.

It often happens in Australia and New Zealand that large groups of whales become stranded. It is not known why this occurs. Researchers think the animals become disoriented near the coast.
