At least three minors have been injured in a shooting at a Finnish school. The suspected shooter has been arrested and is also a minor, police report. Finnish media report that a twelve-year-old child was killed after the shooting.

The shooting took place shortly after 9 a.m. local time (8 a.m. Belgian time) in a primary school with about 800 students between 7 and 15 years old in Vantaa, a suburb of Helsinki. Three 12-year-olds were injured and taken to a nearby hospital. One child has since died there from his or her injuries. It is not clear how seriously the two other injured children are.

The suspect, also a 12-year-old, was arrested without resistance in Helsinki about an hour later – with a firearm in his pocket. It is not clear whether it also concerns a student from the same school, and there is no clarity yet about his or her motive.

For a while, the Finnish police asked local residents to avoid the area surrounding the school, but school director Sari Laasila said that “the immediate danger has passed.”
