Russia says it has evidence of Ukraine’s involvement in Friday’s terror attack in Moscow. More than 140 people were killed. According to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the perpetrators allegedly received “significant amounts of money and crypto coins” from “Ukrainian nationalists.” The White House immediately dismissed this accusation from Russia as “nonsense” and “propaganda”.

Russia’s alleged evidence comes from interrogations of the suspects in custody and investigations into their electronics and financial transactions.

It is not clear what the evidence actually consists of. That was not released.

Ukraine has repeatedly denied that it had anything to do with the attack. The United States says the same. Security adviser John Kirby said in response to the Russian statement that it was clear that the Islamic State was “solely responsible” for the terrorist act. He bluntly called Russia’s new accusation “nonsense” and “propaganda”.

He also stated that the US issued a written warning to Russian security services that an extremist attack on a large gathering in Moscow was imminent. That was part of a series of warnings, according to Kirby. Terror group Islamic State (IS) has effectively claimed responsibility for the terrorist act and also distributed images of the perpetrators during their deadly raid.

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged earlier this week that the attack was the work of “radical Islamists”, but also immediately pointed to Ukraine as the sponsor.

According to experts, Putin would do this to generate support among the Russian population for his war in Ukraine. He was immediately assisted by two of his top officials: the head of the Russian security service FSB, Aleksandr Bortnikov, and the secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev. Bortnikov believed that Ukraine even received help from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Russian state media have also been spreading the message for days that Ukraine is behind the attack.

There are now twelve suspects in the attack in jail. It concerns the four men who actually carried out the attack and eight accomplices.
