Haiti is plunged into chaos by gang violence. That is why the FPS Foreign Affairs contacted the approximately 70 compatriots on the island several times to ask whether they needed help. Five responded positively, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday.

Haiti is suffering from a series of serious crises and has seen a flare-up of violence since the beginning of this month. Armed street gangs are attacking strategic points in the capital in the fight against the regime of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who resigned on March 11. The airport in particular remains closed as a result.

The armed gangs now control 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince, and more than 33,000 civilians have left the capital to escape the gang violence

No embassy

Because Belgium does not have an embassy in Haiti, there is close consultation with EU partner countries that do have an embassy on site.

More than 170 French nationals and approximately 70 Europeans and other foreigners have already been evacuated by French army helicopters. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on Wednesday. On Monday, Canada also began evacuating its citizens.

The Foreign Affairs adds that no communication will be made about the precise details and individual cases.
