Elliot immediately informed the police. Some officers came to collect the blood sample, after which an investigation was opened. But the woman also started looking for answers herself. She called a testing company to see if they could find out who the blood sample belonged to. “They were trying to get information about the patient,” she says. “But because there were no personal details on the bottle, the process could take a long time.”

While waiting for new information, Elliot then contacted the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Due to the biological hazard, they also conducted an investigation and prepared a report,” it said. But there too there was no wind afterwards. Elliot therefore focused on another question: how the blood sample ended up in her package. Shein and FedEx saw a message from Anna Marie appear in their mailbox the day after the package was delivered. “Shein responded very quickly to FedEx, who delivered the package,” says Elliot. “They were helpful and looked at all the camera footage to see if anything had gone wrong during the packing.”

“However, they had not seen anything striking,” said a few days later. “The employee on duty had handled my order correctly.” The American was able to conclude that the fault lay with FedEx. But since the courier company did not want to cooperate, it took a few more days before she got an employee on the phone. And she was ultimately able to confirm her suspicions. “Some packages tear during transport. Our employees then have to reseal the packaging, which often requires them to guess which package contained the item. That happens often, he said. Sometimes they are lucky, but in this case they were very wrong.”

Although Elliot received an answer to her burning question, it is still unclear why the blood tube was transported so carelessly. “The testing company said that a tube is normally always transported cooled and protected,” it said. “Why that was not the case now is still a mystery.”

FedEx has now been able to find out who the blood sample belonged to. Thanks to the QR code on the bottle – which they could obtain with a request from the police – they could see who owned the sample. And that person has now been informed, Anna Marie reports.
