MusicFrom May 7 to 11 it’s that time again: the Eurovision Song Contest. Belgium hopes to secure a place in the grand final with Mustii on Saturday. But who will present the Eurovision Song Contest this year? And when will we see our Belgian entry, Mustii, on TV? The most frequently asked questions are answered here.

Where will the Eurovision Song Contest be held this year?

Sweden was the big winner in the United Kingdom last year with Loreen, which means that the Scandinavian country is the host country this year. Malmö, a city with about 350,000 inhabitants, had competition from, among others, Gothenburg, Örnsköldsvik and especially Stockholm. But Sweden’s third largest city can organize the music festival for the third time in history.

When are the semi-finals and final of the Eurovision Song Contest?

The semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place on Tuesday, May 7 and Thursday, May 9. The final is Saturday, May 11. The music competition starts all three evenings at 9 p.m. and can be followed live on VRT 1. On this site you will also find a live blog that will keep you up to date.

During the semi-finals, the participating countries compete for one of the 26 final spots. Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, also known as ‘the big five’, are already assured of a place in the final. This also applies to Sweden as the winner the year before.

Why do ‘the big five’ go straight to the final?

Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom are immediately assured of a place in the final and therefore do not have to prove themselves during the semi-finals. This is because these countries make the largest financial contributions to the organization every year. These donations are rewarded with a place in the final.

Who will present the Eurovision Song Contest this year?

Petra Mede will present the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time and that is unique. The popular presenter previously did this in 2013 and 2016 when Sweden was also the organizing country. Malin Åkerman will join Mede as presenter this year. She was born in Stockholm, but grew up in Canada and now lives in Los Angeles. She played as an actress in, among others, ‘Entourage’.

How is it possible that Australia is participating?

The name says it all, the Eurovision Song Contest is a European affair. Yet every year countries participate that are not part of the continent of Europe, for example Australia. That country is a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and has been broadcasting it since 1983. In 2015 they were allowed to participate once on the occasion of the 60th edition. The country has been participating ever since. It has been agreed that if Australia wins, the organization of the next edition will go to a European country.

Who is participating on behalf of Belgium?

For us, the Walloon singer Mustii goes to Sweden with the song ‘Before the Party’s Over’, and he is the twelfth of the sixteen acts on stage during the second semi-final on May 9. Mustii is currently ranked sixth among bookmakers, with a 6% chance of winning. That seems low, but it is a lot higher than average. The Dutch Joost Klein is one spot higher with his ‘Europapa’, and has a 7% chance of winning. The Netherlands gets the coveted 16th and last place in the rankings for the second semi-final.
