Ten candidates who only see each other for the first time when they are all out of the water and sitting at the table with Gilles De Coster, it must be a real job logistically to make that possible. And that turns out to be the case when we look at The mole: behind the scenes to look.

The first episode of the season shows how the crew waits for the candidates one by one at Zaventem airport in the morning to depart for an – at that time – unknown destination. Only when they meet online reporter Kelly do they know they are heading to warm Sicily.

But even at that moment, the ten participants do not yet know with whom they are going on a mole hunt. “You are not supposed to get to know your fellow candidates,” says Kelly when she meets Bernard. “So you travel together, but separately.” That was already “very difficult” for Bernard. “So I actually have to be the most antisocial version of myself?”

Indeed, because the candidates are spread out at the airport and also sit separately on the plane. For example, Karolien sits next to a couple at the window of the plane, while Stephanie has a row of seats in front of her all by herself. We see Michael sitting near the back of the aisle.

When they arrive in Sicily, the crew is in for a pleasant surprise. The driver of Gilles Van Bouwel and co. is waiting for them with their name Alain Protputreferring to The island. Before boarding the bus, all candidates are blindfolded and are not allowed to say anything. This means they cannot see or hear each other and are then taken to the hotel where they each have to pack their suitcases separately. To sleep? Of course also separately.

The next day we see the candidates driving to the first test. This happens in small vans where the candidates are again blindfolded and are not allowed to say anything. The area between the front seat and the back seat is also covered. “It’s a bit strange because I usually talk a lot, but now I couldn’t say anything to them,” says one of the local assistants.

Once the ten participants arrive at the place where they are preparing to start the opening test, they still cannot see each other. “We take them to the toilet one by one, but that can take ten people,” Gilles Van Bouwel, the mole of 2016, explains in the video.

And sometimes confusion also arises. When Gillian is allowed to get off, another participant also wants to get off. But he encounters a ‘no’ from Van Bouwel. The candidates then change clothes one by one in a room and have to enter the water blindfolded. When the signal is given that the first test starts, they see each other hanging from the boat for the first time. Only Lynn said she didn’t want to be the mole and stayed on the water in the lifeboat.
