Reader question: is it really the king’s birthday today?
Some of our readers are wondering whether today is really the king’s birthday. That is true, Willem-Alexander was born on April 27, 1967.

In the past (then) Queen’s Day was on April 30. That was Queen Juliana’s birthday. When her daughter Beatrix ascended the throne, she decided to keep Queen’s Day on April 30, in honor of her mother. In addition, there was a good chance of bad weather if Beatrix held the holiday on her own birthday (January 31).

Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte congratulates the king on his 57th birthday. He also wishes the Netherlands a “very nice and pleasant” King’s Day.

Protesting on King’s Day: ‘Expensive and insufficiently transparent’
For many people, King’s Day is a big celebration with free markets and drinks. But for some it is a day of protest. They demonstrate against the monarchy and the income of the royal family. Why are they demonstrating and what do they want?

In the east of the Netherlands it has been April 27 for some time now. As a result, orange snacks were available earlier in Oman, for example.

No incidents reported around King’s Night
So far, no (major) incidents have been reported during the celebration of King’s Night. In Utrecht, the municipality called on people to stop coming to the city because it was too busy. Around midnight the pressure in the city center decreased again. It was also busy in The Hague, among others.

In Amsterdam, a man was injured after falling from scaffolding near the Westertoren. That happened around midnight. The man has been taken to hospital. Four other people who climbed the scaffolding have been arrested.

The center of Purmerend was designated as a safety risk area until 6 a.m. during King’s Night. This is because, according to the municipality, a “worrisome rumor” was circulating on social media. The police had additional powers during the night, such as preventive searches and imposing area bans.

This is how you eat a tompouce without spilling (good luck!)

King’s Day also includes (orange) tompouces. Delicious, but how do you eat something like that without spilling? The editors of NU.nl will show you (with varying degrees of success).

King’s Night or King’s Day?
For quite a few people, King’s Night is actually a bigger celebration than King’s Day. This was celebrated again last night throughout the Netherlands. We are curious how many partygoers are fresh and fruity today.
