Hugo Sigal moved by tribute to Nicole & Hugo at Eurovision Song Contest: “Unbelievable”

--

Hugo Sigal (76) is extremely touched by the unexpected tribute to him and his Nicole on Tuesday evening at the Eurovision Song Contest. “Unbelievable,” the singer responds to radio station JOE.

In 1973, Nicole and Hugo created a previously unseen phenomenon on the Eurovision stage: combining song and dance. And that in their legendary purple suits, which they designed themselves. “They wrote history,” said presenter Malin Åkerman in the run-up to the scoring.

Recognition

The singer did not come completely out of the blue. Permanent voiceover Peter Van de Veire had already told him that “something would happen.” But Sigal is no less pleasantly surprised by the ode. “It was so beautiful,” he responded to radio station JOE. “It is a great pity that Nicole has died and that we are only now, after 52 years, receiving recognition that we have meant something. It has been something fantastic.”

Presenter Anke Buckinx posits that the iconic duo may have finished last because they were so far ahead of their time. “I’ve said it all these years: we were simply too early, and that was proven once again yesterday,” Hugo adds. “But I think it’s so nice for Nicole that they did that. At that moment we knew that we were going to stand out because of our costumes and dance moves, but we never thought that we would be such trendsetters. Unfortunately, we were too early with that.”
