In northern Morocco, a mass death of migratory birds was recorded last week in the Tahaddart nature reserve, which borders the public landfill of El Manzala.

Local authorities and environmental experts are investigating whether pollution from the landfill is the cause of this tragedy. This was reported by the Al Akhbar newspaper.

The migratory birds, which have traveled thousands of kilometers to get to Tangier, usually stay in the Tahaddart reserve, an important stopover on their trans-African or intercontinental route. The reserve, which originally covered 14,000 hectares, is a source of oxygen for the region, but has suffered in recent years from deforestation and the disappearance of some bird species.

The El Manzala landfill, whose fetid odors penetrate the heart of the reserve, is also considered a serious environmental problem. Several families living in the area have already moved due to the nuisance.

There are fears that banned products or insecticides may have been used at the dump, or that toxins may have leaked into nearby water surfaces where the birds drink.

A committee sent to the scene must determine the precise cause or causes of the sudden death of the birds.
