Potato market report week 13:
The German trade in potatoes for consumption was generally quite quiet. Domestic ware potatoes from storage continued to dominate the market, with only a few offers from the Netherlands and France in support. Overall the quality was convincing. According to BLE, availability was sufficient to meet the interest. However, the odds tended to increase slightly in some places. Deliveries of new potatoes increased and reviews in this segment also rose here and there.Rhineland-Palatinate:
When selling in retail, consumers prefer cheaper products. More expensive products are left behind and suffer from quality. Producer prices are fixed, and there is still sufficient supply to fall back on. Calm demand is expected after Easter due to the holiday period. The fields are drying out, which promotes planting.
Hesse:
In the state of Hesse there were no price changes for storage potatoes compared to last week.
NRW:
Additional demand impulses are expected on the consumer market due to the Easter trade. Imports of early potatoes are increasingly supplementing the local supply. There are few changes in the industrial market. The planting of early industrial potatoes has so far been limited.
Schleswig-Holstein:
The quotations at the wholesaler of consumption potatoes also remained unchanged in the Easter week. Sales have recently been boosted by special store promotions. The supply remains more than sufficient. The predictions about a sold-out potato market at Easter did not come true. Recently, the supply has even increased slightly, as many companies use the time until planting for potato sales. However, the supply of premium products remains scarce. There are already many imported potatoes on the market at a national level. Locally, the supply from Egypt or Israel, for example, is limited and expensive. People are now hoping for good demand during the Easter trade.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:
The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern seed association wants to continue to protect and avoid pests on the agricultural lands of Vorpommern. Together with the companies involved, the possibility of collaborating with hobby gardeners’ associations in the future has already been discussed. For example, it would be possible to partly sponsor certified seed potatoes for hobby gardeners. No decision has been made yet, but people certainly want to continue to monitor and discuss this topic in a targeted manner. There does seem to be interest among hobby gardeners.
