The Dutch Safety Board (OVV) is investigating an accident on the Dutch cruise ship De Nieuw Amsterdam of Holland America Line. Two crew members died there on Friday.

Two OVV employees have traveled to the Caribbean, where the accident happened, the council said.

Something went wrong in the engine room of De Nieuw Amsterdam on Friday, Holland America Line announced last weekend. The accident happened near Half Moon Cay, which is part of the Bahamas.

According to, among others Cruise Law News an explosion occurred in the engine room. The site shows various images of the damage caused as a result. The explosion is said to have released hot steam. The watertight doors closed automatically and the ventilation to the room switched off.

The two employees therefore had nowhere to go, writes Cruise Law News. They probably suffocated from the lack of oxygen and from the hot steam. Their bodies were reportedly found close to the closed watertight doors.

The Council itself has not yet made any statements about details

The OVV itself has not yet made any statements about the details of the accident. The council also does not yet know anything about the nationality of the two employees, a spokesperson told NU.nl.

The council is now on its way to Half Moon Cay to find out exactly what happened. The OVV also wants to see what lessons can be learned from the incident. The council is obliged to do this based on international laws and regulations. Authorities in the Bahamas are also investigating the accident.
