De Moor was somewhat surprised. “I was surprised by the choice, given the international situation. Cartoons about Ukraine and Gaza had also been selected, but in the end they opted for a Belgian, and specifically Brussels, situation.”
The cartoonist is proud of his prize, which he has now won for the third time. “You work on and on for a whole year, you don’t expect that. But: c’est la cerise sur le gâteau.”
A total of 19 cartoonists were nominated with 102 cartoons that appeared in the press in 2023. De Moor will receive the prize – 5,000 euros – on July 6 at the Knokke-Heist Cartoon Festival.
Political cartoonist
Johan De Moor was born in Antwerp, but moved to Brussels as a child. He took lessons at La Cambre, Le 75 in Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe and Sint-Lukas in Schaarbeek, where he taught drawing for ten years. De Moor is also the son of cartoonist Bob De Moor, best known for his work for Tintin.
He released several comics, including Kobe the Cow and made dozens of cartoons featuring the characters Kwik and Flupke. He also worked as a political cartoonist for newspapers Le Soir and The morning.
De Moor also won the Grand Prize Press Cartoon Belgium in 2008 and 2019, for a cartoon about King Albert II’s Christmas message and about the MeToo affair, respectively.
