‘iPad 2024 will be much cheaper than its predecessor’

All iPads will be upgraded this year, but the regular model may get the best update: the iPad 2024 will reportedly be cheaper than its predecessor!

The iPad has not received any attention for a while. 2023 was the first year since its debut in 2010 in which no model was upgraded – even in terms of iPad accessories, only an Apple Pencil with USB-C was released. The ‘latest’ model is still the iPad 2022, which was released in October of that year.

This week, that iPad drought is finally coming to an end. The first Apple event of the year will take place on Tuesday, May 7, where two new iPads will probably be announced. First, an iPad Air with two different screen sizes. Secondly, an iPad Pro with an OLED screen. Plus there are some accessories coming, like a new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil 3.

Bloomberg tech analyst Mark Gurman writes that Apple is currently working hard on a new ‘normal’ iPad. The price tag in particular must be attractive: Apple wants to make the iPad 2024 cheaper than the iPad 2022, which has a price tag from € 589.45. Apple would like to charge a similar price to that of its predecessor, the iPad 2021. It will be sold from € 439.45 – a difference of no less than 150 euros!

However, that price drop turns out to be easier said than done, because the iPad 2022 received its high price tag because of all its innovations. This includes a new design with thinner screen edges, a housing without a home button, and an A14 Bionic chip. So the question is how Apple can lower the price tag of the iPad 2024 without sacrificing the improved design, chip and more. By the way, we are already seeing this conflict in the (online) Apple Store: Apple still sells the iPad 2022 and the cheaper iPad 2021.

The iPad 2024 will have to wait for now. Gurman expects that this device will not be available in stores until the end of the year at the earliest. If Apple is unable to compromise on hardware and price in time, it will likely take even longer.
