“It’s further proof that standalone AI gadgets, like the Humane AI Pin, are fundamentally useless devices meant to attract hype and VC funding,” Engadget said of the Rabbit R1, the AI sidekick that seemed promising.

The Rabbit R1 was one of the big surprises during the CES 2024 electronics fair in January this year. The AI gadget costs only $199 and, according to its maker, should be the simplest computer ever. Inside is a MediaTek MT6765 octa-core chip that reaches a speed of 2.3 GHz, 4 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage. It also contains a camera and a microphone. You can only talk to it. It is, as it were, a ChatGPT in an orange box.

There are currently only four apps available (Uber, DoorDash, Spotify and Midjourney), so not much can be done with it. “Other than the obvious small number, these aren’t useful to me,” the TechCruch reviewer said.

Engadget assesses: ‘At the moment the R1 can hardly do anything as an AI assistant. And the few tasks it can actually perform, like placing DoorDash orders, are faster and easier to tackle on your phone. You know, the device we already have that can use AI features and fast mobile networks.”

According to The Verge, it’s better to stick to your smartphone. In a test, Google Assistant appeared to perform better than Rabbit’s AI. The device does not seem to have any real added value.

CNET gives the device a poor six out of 10. Although the Rabbit R1 understands what you say well, it has some difficulty with execution. Many services do not yet work on the gadget. Apps from Uber and Doordash on smartphones are much more extensive.

The battery life was also limited, but that has now been resolved with an update.

The comparable Humane AI Pin has also been quite negative in the reviews.
