The announcement that a PSN account would soon be required to Hell divers 2 being able to play on PC has started a rollercoaster that has now ended with Sony turning around. In response to what Sony considers valuable feedback from the community, it has been decided not to make a PSN account mandatory after all.

In principle, it was always the intention that players of Helldivers 2 on PC would link a PSN account, but due to a technical problem this was not yet possible at the launch of the game. However, today a patch was going to be rolled out that would make linking a PSN account mandatory, but that will not happen.

Many PC players quickly showed that they were not satisfied with a mandatory link to a PSN account. However, it also happens elsewhere and players on Steam regularly have to link something to an account from, say, Microsoft, EA or Ubisoft. In the case of Sony, however, reference is often made to the major PSN hack of 2011, which has left many players fearing for the security of their data.

In any case, a large part of the community did not like the mandatory PSN account. The result was more than 200,000 negative reviews and many refunds were requested. In 177, Helldivers 2 was also removed from digital store shelves, because those countries do not have a PSN.

Sony has now turned around and thanks the community for the valuable feedback. They say they want to set a new standard for live service games, and they want to do that together with the community.

The link to a PSN account was intended to better guarantee the safety of players and to better enforce bans. At developer Arrowhead they are already developing tools that should be able to achieve this same goal, but without using a mandatory PSN account.
