Ubuntu 24.04 is out. Noble Numbat is one long-term supportrelease with five years of support. The new version of the distro is based on Linux kernel 6.8 and uses the Gnome 46 desktop environment.

Canonical has made Ubuntu 24.04 lts Noble Numbat generally available. The release will receive support for five years, although it is possible to extend that for another five years with a free Ubuntu Pro subscription. It is the tenth LTS release of the most popular Linux distro.

Ubuntu 24.04 is based on Linux kernel version 6.8. One of the biggest changes to the OS is that Ubuntu 24.04 uses Gnome 46 as its desktop environment. The installer has also been updated. It is now based on Google’s Flutter framework. The installer will now allow disabled users to instantly adjust accessibility settings upon installation and will allow installation scripts to always use the same settings.

Like the installer, Ubuntu’s new App Center is also based on Flutter. That should be a replacement for Ubuntu Software, but based on Flutter. The tool should also make it easier to manage Snaps, which was possible via Software Center but less practical. In Ubuntu 24.04, Thunderbird has also been changed to a Snap package, after Canonical previously did so for Firefox and Chrome.
