With three match days to go, RSC Anderlecht once again had to give up its leading position in the Champions’ Play-Offs. But the national title has certainly not taken off yet. Nevertheless, work is already being done behind the scenes towards next season.

After the victory against Union SG on the third day of the Champions’ Play-Offs, the Lotto Park was still on fire. Logical too: Anderlecht could thus take the lead in the rankings for the first time since August 2018. And possibly even more important, the 35th national title in club history suddenly came very close.

But then the Purple & White started to struggle. Especially in his competitions away from home. RSCA already played four away matches in the POs, which resulted in a poor balance of 2 out of 12. Far too little for a team that wants to become champions. On Sunday, Anderlecht also ended up with just a scoreless draw when they visited Union.

Crucial saves

The record champion did have chances to win in the Dudenpark. But in general we were happy that it didn’t go down. After all, the best opportunities were for the home team and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had to make several important saves.

The experienced Dane proved to be of instrumental importance and ensured that RSCA did not drop to third place. In general, Schmeichel has emerged as a reliable closing piece in the second half of the season. Nevertheless, there is a real chance that he is playing his last matches at RSCA.

Replacement in the picture

In principle, Schmeichel’s contract expires after this season. There is an option to extend that agreement, but according to La Dernière Heure and The newspapaer it is quite realistic that the goalkeeper will leave. A lot will depend on which teams report after the European Championship. Moreover, Schmeichel signed last summer on limited terms. At 37, he won’t pass up a financial upgrade. That is why Anderlecht is showing interest in Daniel Peretz, third goalkeeper of Bayern Munich.
