Of Baldur’s gate 3 Larian Studios from Ghent won the top prize at the prestigious Game Awards last year. But despite that great success, the game will not have a successor, says founder Swen Vincke. “This is not an easy farewell, but it is the right decision for us.”
With more than ten million copies sold, rave reviews and even the top prize at The Game Awards, or ‘the Oscars of the gaming world’, Baldur’s gate 3 one of last year’s biggest successes. Logically, fans were already looking forward to more, in the form of an expansion or even Baldur’s gate 4.
But Larian Studios has no intention of doing that. This week, big boss Swen Vincke (51) announced during a conference that the people of Ghent are going to create something completely new.
Learned much
“It is not easy to say goodbye to that world and the characters, but we knew this day would come,” Vincke writes on social media. “This is the right decision for us. We learned a lot from this game, and look forward to applying that to a new project.”
But it is still unclear what that project will be. “It will be different than you think, but still recognizable,” Vincke said mysteriously in an interview with the gaming website IGN. In any case, fans will still have to be patient for a long time. At Baldur’s gate 3 four hundred people worked for more than six years. (read more below the photo)

Taking over the torch
This does not mean that there will never be a fourth part in the Baldur’s gate-series can come. Those games are actually based on the popular board game Dungeons and dragons. The rights to this do not belong to Larian but to another company, Wizards of the Coast.
If they find another game studio willing to take over Larian’s torch, there is a chance that we will one day see a fourth part. But given the success of Baldur’s gate 3 It remains to be seen whether (and when) someone will dare to take up that challenge.
