Tomorrow, on the day of the second leg of the semi-finals of the Conference League, it will be sixteen years since François Sterchele died. This is anything but forgotten in Jan Breydel.

To this day, in the 23rd minute – his shirt number – there is applause for the blue-black striker who died too young. He was just 26 when he died in a car accident.

Even more symbolic: Sterchele celebrated his goals with his hand to his ear. Just like former top striker Luca Toni, who mainly scored his goals for… Fiorentina.

Sterchele started his professional career with La Louvière in 2000 and went on to play for clubs such as Germinal Beerschot and Club Brugge. Sterchele reached his peak at Club Brugge, where he was known for his goal-scoring instincts and his dedication on the field.

Sterchele had also received some call-ups for the Red Devils and was considered a player with potential for the future of the national team.

Tragically, his promising career came to an abrupt end when he died in a car accident on May 8, 2008. His death shocked the Belgian football community and its fans, and he is still remembered as a talented player taken far too soon.
