It happens to the best of people: when even Hein Vanhaezebrouck sees a plan completely go up in smoke – Football News

--

Just because it ended well does not mean that Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s plan was successful. Julien De Sart is on a suspension card and was therefore put on the bench against Westerlo, ahead of KV Mechelen. However, the same De Sart eventually had to show up.

Was that raid anticipated? “No”, is Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s clear answer. “It was the intention that Julien De Sart would be spared the entire match, so that he would certainly not have to miss against Mechelen.” Since the game was so difficult against Westerlo, De Sart still played the last half hour.

Instructions from Vanhaezebrouck

“With him and Gerkens there, the difference was enormous. Those two substitutions change everything. It was an absolute necessity to bring them in.” Naturally, Vanhaezebrouck urged De Sart not to take a yellow card. Although you shouldn’t exaggerate in such a position, otherwise there is no point in being on the field.

“I also told Julien: if someone goes for goal alone and it is necessary, then take the yellow card. He had to restrain himself a few times, but he was sensible.” Bringing maturity into his game is therefore no problem. That has proven to be the case. What does the footballer in question have to say about this whole matter?

“Ah, did the coach say that he normally wouldn’t bring me in? I didn’t know that. He taught me well to beware of a yellow card. Between February and May I was left with four yellow cards. So I’m just to be on a suspension card,” De Sart tells us.

De Sart’s quip

The midfielder also realizes that it is not always possible to choose the ideal scenario. “Sometimes you just have to take a card. Maybe I’ll take one at the end of the play-offs, but not in the last match,” he concludes with a quip.
