Cyclocross rider Toon Aerts won the Gravel Fondo Limburg this morning, a race in the Gravel World Series in Valkenburg in the Netherlands. For Aerts it was his first victory since he was suspended for 2 years for a positive doping test.
Toon Aerts shouted his innocence for 2 years and spoke of contamination, but could not avoid punishment for the forbidden letrozole in his body.
Since mid-February he could call himself a cross rider again. At the end of that month he suffered a broken nose in the Oostmalle closing price.
The rider of Team Deschacht-Group Hens-Containers Maes is now completely fit again and proved this in the Gravel Fondo Limburg.
After a 105 kilometer race through Dutch Limburg, he defeated the Dutchman Piotr Havik in a sprint with two people. Another northern neighbor came third with Adne Koster.
Several named former riders finished in the top 15: Johnny Hoogerland finished 5th, Greg Van Avermaet 6th, Jan Bakelants 8th and Niki Terpstra 13th. The Dutch Tessa Neefjes won the women’s race.
Aerts did not just participate in the gravel race today. He is trying to qualify for the Clay World Cup in October in Leuven.
