The rumor has been in the air for some time that Mark van Bommel will soon leave Antwerp. Valentijn Driessen, football chief of De Telegraaf, revealed in the Kickoff podcast that it is almost certain that Van Bommel and Marc Overmars will no longer be at the Bosuil next season.

Van Bommel’s name was already mentioned at AC Milan, but they seem to be opting for Julen Lopetegui. But Antwerp’s Dutch success coach knows that more strong players will soon be sold at The Great Old.

It was already much less this year, but next season Antwerp might not be able to compete for the prizes. “Van Bommel is leaving, and I think Overmars too,” Driessen reveals. “They are done there. That chairman (Paul Gheysens, ed.) has so many financial problems that he can no longer keep his agreements.”

This opinion also exists in the Belgian news. “At Germany – Netherlands, Mike and I met a reporter from Het Laatste Nieuws and he said that it was in the pipeline. This week I heard that it was the end of the story.”

Antwerp also sold Arthur Vermeeren to Atlético Madrid this season and it will not stop there. “That team is no longer a shadow of the team that became champions last year,” said Driesen.

Gheysens has pumped millions into Antwerp in recent years, but seems to be putting his finger on the money this summer. Overmars and Van Bommel won him a title and a cup, but without tools the Dutch are less pleased.
