The environmental permit for Club Brugge’s new stadium remains annulled. The Council of State decided this on Thursday. Blauw-zwart already submitted an amended application for the permit in November, “in which special attention was paid to the parking and mobility policy”.

In February last year, the Council for Permit Disputes canceled the permit for the new stadium. One of the reasons for this was that the parking regulations were not in line with the mobility plans in the stadium file. The council was of the opinion that according to the regulation, parking must always be provided on-site. In addition, objections from local residents about the mobility plan were not dealt with carefully enough.
The Flemish government, Club Brugge and the city of Bruges started working on drawing up a new file based on the comments. At the same time, they also appealed to the Council of State against the cancellation of the first environmental permit. The Council now judges that the objections have indeed been taken into account too little. The issue of the parking regulation therefore no longer needed to be examined.
Strike in the water
The ruling of the Council of State is a blow in the water, because a second (amended) application for an environmental permit was submitted in November 2023. “The submitted file is the result of a round of adjustments on top of the original file after the previous environmental permit was annulled by the Council for Permit Disputes in February earlier this year. In this updated file, special attention was paid to parking and mobility policy,” says Blauw-zwart.
