Lorena Wiebes sprints to victory with superior power and wins the Scheldeprijs for the fourth year in a row

Lorena Wiebes has won the Scheldeprijs for the fourth time. In Schoten, the 25-year-old Dutch woman from SD Worx-Protime was clearly the fastest of the pack. She won ahead of her compatriot Charlotte Kool and the Italian Martina Fidanza.

Two riders started the final lap with a one-minute lead: Anneke Dijkstra and Wilma Aintila. The pace in the peloton increased more and more. During the last passage on the cobblestones of the Broekstraat, Mischa Bredewold took the pack in tow.

In the long stretch next to the Albert Canal, those of Team SD Worx-Protime were reinforced by several other teams with sprinters on board. Under the arc of the last three kilometers, halfway through the peloton, a bunch of riders hit the asphalt again.

Dijkstra and Aintila were caught just before the red rag and so they prepared for the announced bunch sprint. There was no match for Lorena Wiebes, who left the whole pack behind her. Marthe Truyen was the best Belgian sixth. Lorena Wiebes recorded her sixth victory this season and won all four editions of the Scheldeprijs.

Wiebes: “Win ​​in a beautiful way”

“I think I won that sprint in a nice way,” Lorena Wiebes responded after her victory. “I chose the wheel of Charlotte, my former lead-out. In the corner of my eye I suddenly saw Elisa Balsamo approaching from the left. It took some fighting for her wheel, but I still chose my own path. In this way I managed to round off the hard work of my teammates with a nice team victory. It is clear that in such a sprint all the pieces of the puzzle must fall together and fit. After all, the chance of being locked in is always high.”

The Dutch made a special victory gesture. She flew across the finish line like a bird. “I imitated ‘Vogelvrij’, a song by Jantje Smit. It’s a running gag we have with the team. After my victory in the Tour of Drenthe, I imitated a guitar player. I now have to work on something else that I can use for the next victory,” laughed Wiebes. “I came out of the Tour of Flanders well and am already looking forward to this weekend with Paris-Roubaix on the program.”
