Club Brugge is labeled by everyone as the top favorite to win the title. But that will only become clear after the next fourteen days. Blue-Black plays four times in eleven days, all crucial matches.
That’s why Bart Verhaeghe was so angry. The Club chairman indicated that they had requested a postponement of their matches against Antwerp and Union, each time just after the semi-final matches against Fiorentina, but they were given a ‘no’ in return.
After all, calendar maker Nils Van Brantegem no longer has room to postpone those matches. After the regular competition, the internationals must be available to the national teams five days later, which will prepare the European Championship.
There’s just no more room in the calendar. That is why Club wants to see the play-offs abolished during the negotiations on the new competition format, despite the fact that they are benefiting from the system this season.
Club has never been in favor of those play-offs and sees more benefit in a normal competition, where there would be room to move matches.
After all, they have already played 57 matches. That matters, even though Nicky Hayen has already rotated a lot and the core of Club is extremely broad. They can therefore end the season with as many as 64 games under their belt if they reach the final. No one in Europe does better.
