Ukraine has qualified for the European Championships in Germany. In the finals of the play-offs, Iceland was defeated 2-1: 2-1. The country will face Belgium, Slovakia and Romania at the European Championship.
In Wroclaw, Poland, where Ukraine played because of the war with Russia, Iceland took the lead in the first half. Former AZ player Albert Gudmundsson, now a Genoa player, scored the goal.
After the break, the Ukrainians completely turned things around. Viktor Tsygankov equalized in the 54th minute, after which Chelsea striker Mudryk fired his country into the European Championship with a shot in the corner.
Ukraine qualified for the finals of the Nations League with a victory over Israel.
First final tournament in Georgia
Earlier in the evening, Georgia qualified for the European Championship in Germany via the play-offs. Greece was defeated on penalties in Tbilisi, meaning Georgia will be present at a final tournament for the first time.
Georgia finished fourth in its European Championship qualifying group, but ended up in the play-offs via the Nations League. The victory over Greece puts the Georgians in a tough group with Portugal, Turkey and the Czech Republic at the European Championship.
No goals were scored in regular time or extra time. In the penalty shootout, Ajax player Georges Mikautadze (on loan from Metz) missed a penalty. Anastasios Bakasetas and former VVV player Giorgos Giakoumakis missed for the Greeks.
Georgia had been too strong for Luxembourg in the semi-finals of the play-offs. Former Vitesse captain Guram Kashia was in the starting line-up against Greece. This also applied to the team’s absolute star, Napoli striker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
