Julian Alaphilippe crossed the line ninth in Milan-San Remo. The Frenchman from Soudal Quick-Step said he could have finished higher, because he had to deal with a flat tire in the absolute final phase. “I was good all day,” he says via his team’s official channels.

“I’m happy with the way I rode. I had a good feeling all day and I had an incredibly strong team by my side. They have constantly protected me and always positioned me well at the right times. I am disappointed myself because I got a flat tire in the final. Without that flat tire I certainly could have finished higher.”

Yet the former world champion is not all disappointed. “Top 10 in the first monument of the year is certainly not bad. Especially because, after everything that has happened in recent weeks, I could definitely participate in the final. I can’t wait for the Belgian classics now. I hope to continue the upward trend there.”
