A Flemish philosophy student died on Saturday when she fell from the Cliffs of Moher in the west of Ireland while walking with three friends. According to sources from the ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper, it is believed that she lost her balance.

The Cliffs of Moher are among the highest cliff coasts in Europe and are one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions. Close to where the tragedy occurred, they are 120 meters high.

The Flemish student – a young woman in her twenties who, according to the ‘Mirror’, studied in the Scottish capital Edinburgh – visited the cliffs with three friends. “This is a terrible tragedy and our condolences go out to the family of this young woman and her friends who witnessed her fall,” the source said.

The three friends are said to have different nationalities and do not live in Ireland. It was one of them who raised the alarm at 1.20 pm on Saturday. A major search and rescue operation was immediately launched. The Irish coast guard, the fire brigade and a rescue helicopter took part. The helicopter had just left for training and was on site within minutes.

The student’s body was quickly located. A rescue boat crew pulled it out of the water and brought it ashore. The young woman was pronounced dead at a Coast Guard station in Doolin. It is understood the body will be taken to Limerick University Hospital for an autopsy.

Irish authorities have confirmed the tragedy to British and Irish media.

This is not the first time someone has died on the Cliffs of Moher. In January 2019, a 26-year-old man from India fell while taking selfies. And in 2007, a Hungarian man in his twenties also died while taking photos.
