Belgian student falls from a 120-metre high cliff in Ireland

A Belgian woman died on Saturday afternoon after falling from a cliff in Ireland. Local media report this. It concerns a student who studied in Scotland.

The young woman is said to have visited the Cliffs of Moher, in the west of Ireland, with three friends. For unknown reasons, she lost her balance at the edge of the cliff and fell down. The rescue services started a major search. Soon her lifeless body was found in the water.

According to the local newspaper Cork Beo it concerns a Belgian medical student. She was supposed to study at a university in Edinburgh, Scotland, but was on a trip to Ireland with friends.

“Gardai (Irish National Police, ed.) and emergency services carried out an operation this afternoon following reports of an incident at the Cliffs Moher. The body of a woman in her early 20s was pulled from the water by emergency services. Her body remains at the scene,” it said on Saturday.

Not first time

The Cliffs of Moher are a well-known attraction in the region. At the highest point there is a height difference of 214 meters. At the spot where the young woman died, the cliffs are about 120 meters high.

It is also not the first fatal accident in the region. In January 2019, a 26-year-old Indian fell down while trying to take a selfie. In June 2007, a Hungarian man in his twenties died while hiking the Cliffs of Moher. He was taking pictures with friends.
