Liver doctor Sarah Raevens (UZ Gent) is an expert when it comes to the functioning of our liver. She knows perfectly what is good and bad for this organ. Together with some colleagues, she has now written a book on the subject.

‘The liver. Everything you need to know about this vital organ’ is the title of the book, in which, in addition to Raevens, Hans Van Vlierberghe, Anja Geerts, Xavier Verhelst, Helena Degroote and Lore Hoof also contributed.

Following the publication of this book, Raevens had a conversation with De Morgen. In that interview she was asked about the effects of coffee on the liver. Should coffee fans worry? “No, absolutely not,” came the response. “It is also such a persistent idea that is not correct. Coffee may even be good for your liver.”

“Observations in people with liver cirrhosis who developed liver cancer show that those who drank coffee daily had a lower risk of developing liver cancer. That does not mean that you should necessarily start drinking coffee, because it is not a solid study, but an observation that looks back in time. But coffee is certainly not harmful.”
