At least three messages on Facebook say that NMBS offers a gift card for just two euros to all travelers who complete a questionnaire. With this gift card, travelers could travel anywhere in Belgium for free for a year.

In the comments below those posts, several people claim that the information is correct. They then add a photo to their comment showing that they have received the card. But the reports are false. In this way, scammers try to obtain bank details from their victims. A similar message is also going around about the Dutch Railways (NS).

The NMBS therefore warns in a press release not to respond to the messages. “NMBS would like to warn about this and asks its travelers to only rely on communication through its official channels,” it said. The railway company also asks never to share personal information or bank details with these types of offers. Bart Crols, spokesperson for the NMBS, confirms that the NMBS will never request personal information on a web page that is not secure.

According to the spokesperson, the railway company previously filed a complaint with the competent authorities and with social media channels, but the fraudulent messages continue to circulate.
