Two San Francisco billionaires have reported their 16-year-old daughter missing. Mint Butterfield (16) is the only child of Stewart Butterfield (51) and Caterina Fake (54). The couple founded the photo and video website Flickr together. After their divorce, Butterfield launched the communication tool Slack. The billionaires are now looking for what is most precious to them.

According to a press release from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Mint Butterfield, 16, was last seen on Sunday, April 21, around 10 p.m. That was at their home in Bolinas, a coastal suburb of San Francisco.

“The next morning, Caterina Fake realized that Mint (16) was not at home. She discovered a note indicating that her daughter had left the home with a suitcase at an unknown time during the night or early morning. It is unclear how Mint left as she had no phone or vehicle.”

Drug problem

Caterina Fake (54) suspects that her daughter may have moved to the Tenderloin District in San Francisco, a notorious part of the city for its high crime rate and large-scale homeless problem. According to ‘The San Francisco Standard’, the teenager struggles with a drug and addiction problem and has been spotted in that neighborhood several times in the past.

The police have issued an investigation notice with a photo of the teenager. “There is currently nothing to indicate that Mint (16) was taken against her will,” it said. The billionaire’s daughter is believed to be a voluntarily runaway youth in danger due to a previously reported threat of suicide.

Flickr and Slack

Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake co-founded the photo and video website Flickr in 2004, which they sold to Yahoo in 2005. The couple separated in 2008. Butterfield then started the ubiquitous workplace collaboration tool Slack. It was acquired by Salesforce in 2021 for $28 billion. Butterfield left the company in 2022.
