The third stage of the Giro d’Italia turned out to be a sprint – despite a spectacular finale. A sprint without Fabio Jakobsen, because the Dutchman had to drop out on the last climb. “I had to let go of the wheels 500 meters from the top,” he says Eurosport back on the final.

“My legs exploded,” is his clear explanation. “We then agreed that Tobi (Tobias Lund Andresen, ed.) could take his chance. He was super good, it’s a shame he just couldn’t win.” The young Dane – who won three stages in the previous Tour of Turkey – finished fifth in Fossano.

Then we had to wait a while for Jakobsen to arrive, who eventually crossed the line in 130th place, almost three minutes behind stage winner Tim Merlier. “Of course I prefer to sprint myself. But if it’s not for me, it’s for him,” he refers to his younger teammate.

“We knew it was going to be tough today. I’m doing my best and now on to Tuesday. Tomorrow it will be the same final, but the slope will be a bit shorter. We’re just going to try again.”
