If Ukraine receives missiles with a longer range from the United States, Russia will expand the “buffer zone” in Ukraine, the government in Moscow says. Russia has previously said that such a buffer should prevent Russian targets from being hit from Ukrainian territory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded with his statements about the buffer zone to the news that the US Senate has approved a new support package worth one billion dollars (more than 900 million euros). Ukraine may therefore have access to so-called ATACM missiles with a longer range.

300 kilometers

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he hopes Washington will supply missiles with a range of about 300 kilometers. As far as we know, Ukraine now only has a variant that can only travel 165 kilometers. Zelensky called it “crucial” that his country receives those weapons.

Peskov said that Russia has long believed that weapons with longer range also require a larger buffer zone. Nothing has changed in that policy, the spokesperson said.
