The rise of fringe benefits in the pay package of Belgian employees continues unabated. This is evident from the Salariskompas, an annual survey by Jobat and the market research agency Ipsos into the salary package of almost 92,000 Belgians.

According to the Salary Compass, the average Belgian employee enjoyed 6.63 fringe benefits in 2023, on top of a median gross salary of 3,800 euros per month. In 2019, there were only 6 fringe benefits, or an increase of one tenth in five years. This increase can be noted for all components of the fringe benefits package.

The largest increase is for ‘the possibility of working from home’. Before the corona crisis, in 2019, about a third of employees were allowed to work from home regularly. This now applies to just over half.

Men get a little more

By far the two most popular ‘extras’ are meal vouchers and hospitalization insurance. Almost eight in ten of all employees receive meal vouchers, and almost seven in ten have hospitalization insurance. Nearly six in ten of the respondents from the Salary Compass have a work laptop and are building up a supplementary pension through their employer.

The survey also shows that extra-legal benefits are granted (slightly) more to men than to women, especially when it comes to company cars, significantly more to highly educated people (especially with regard to supplementary pension and hospitalization insurance) and much more to white-collar workers from the private sector than to blue-collar workers. and government employees.

A comparison between the business sectors also shows that staff in education and catering are much less likely to receive fringe benefits than employees in the top sectors of energy and telecom/IT.
