A police chase in Bassevelde ended with a crash on Saturday evening. The driver sped away after the police in Aalter wanted to intercept him for excessive speed. The suspect and two passengers then sped away on foot in Bekputstraat. They were eventually caught.

It was a busy evening on Saturday for three East Flemish police zones. A driver was noticed by the police in Aalter for excessive speed, after which the officers wanted to remove him from traffic. Instead of pulling over, the driver pressed the accelerator. What followed was a dangerous chase from Aalter, through Kaprijk, to end abruptly in Bassevelde.

There the driver lost control of the steering wheel and ended up in the ditch next to the roadway. Instead of surrendering, he jumped out of the car with the two occupants and they started running. The police arrived en masse for a large-scale search. Dozens of police officers searched the fields with flashlights, swans were stationed in the surrounding streets to check cars and even the helicopter was called in. “Shortly after starting the search, one suspect was captured,” says Commissioner Joeri Van den Branden. “Not much later, the two other people were also traced.” Two of them have now been released, the last will also be released on Sunday, as it does not concern a judicial investigation, but traffic violations.
