Star Wars Day with the shooting of two films in Spain

--

Star Wars Day is an informal day of remembrance held annually on May 4 to celebrate George Lucas’ Star Wars media franchise. Observation of the day spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations since the franchise began in 1977.

It is not by accident that this commemoration day falls annually on May 4. In English, four may is ‘May the Fourth’, which is similar to ‘May the Force’ as in the popular Star Wars catchphrase ‘May the Force be with you’. That pun is the reason that May 4 is Star Wars Day and you often hear the true fans say ‘May the Fourth Be With You’.

Star Wars fans in Spain also reflect on this unofficial holiday or commemoration day, especially because shootings for Star Wars films have taken place twice in Spain.

Seville

The movie ‘Attack of the Clones‘ which premiered in 2002, was partly recorded in Seville (Andalusia). There, the emblematic Plaza de España served as the stage for the Amidala residence on Princess Leia’s home planet Nabook.

Even though the square with its thousands of tiles has been updated with computer animation, the square from 1928 is still clearly recognizable.

Fuerteventura

16 years later in 2018, the film ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story‘ about the adventures of young Han Solo and his friend Chewbacca and how they met each other, recordings made on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

The Star Wars team settled on the Cofete and Barlovento stands in 2017 to film in the Valle de Pecenescal and the Parque Natural de Jandía, known for its dunes. This area served as Han Solo’s home planet Corellia in the film.
