Zeeman will expand the sale of second-hand women’s, baby and children’s clothing in Belgium to 2 additional branches. In addition to the stores in Merksem and Genk, the used clothing is also resold in Brussels and Berchem.

The textile discounter has been testing since 2022 reselling collected baby and children’s clothing in Belgium. Now the initiative is being further scaled up. “Too much clothing is still thrown away and we want to do something about that. Our goal is to further expand our second-hand initiative,” says sustainability director Arnoud van Vliet.

Second-hand clothing can be returned in all Zeeman stores in the Netherlands and Belgium. This textile goes to thrift store Het Goed, a social enterprise that further sorts the clothing and sells it on to Zeeman. Garments that are suitable for resale are thus given a second life. What is not suitable for reuse is recycled into yarns, insulation material or cleaning cloths.

In addition to the 4 stores in Belgium, some of the second-hand items are also resold in the Netherlands. There are 6 affiliated branches in our country, in Nijmegen, Nieuwegein, Amsterdam, Alphen aan den Rijn, The Hague and Maastricht.

Initially, only second-hand baby and children’s clothing was sold in the affiliated stores. Women’s clothing is now also being given a second life. Prices for baby and children’s clothing range up to 10 euros; that of women’s clothing up to 17 euros.

How does Zeeman tilt the linear business model towards circular? In this interview Van Vliet reveals some ‘pre-loved’ secrets.
