The province of Flemish Brabant is launching the ‘Neighboring Nature’ campaign, which promotes nature reserves in an innovative way. For example, there is an online platform on which 10 Flemish Brabant nature reserves are central. The visitor will find a digital map with these areas on which he can click for more information. Via an app on the smartphone, people receive notifications with interesting facts at certain places during walks through the areas. The aim is to let Flemish Brabanders discover the surprising natural secrets around their corner and to ensure that they know who their cherished neighbors are.

“There is more nature in your neighborhood than you think. And that certainly applies to Flemish Brabant,” says Bart Nevens, deputy for the environment. “Because you will find a surprising amount of valuable greenery just around the corner. They are places with rare and unique animals and plants that you can only find there. You can relax, breathe and clear your head. And because we are only too happy to cherish and strengthen this top nature, we are launching the major Neighboring Nature campaign for all Flemish Brabanders.”

Ten nature reserves in the spotlight

With ‘Neighbor Nature’, Flemish Brabant puts 10 nature reserves, spread across the entire province, in the spotlight. In our region these are Kesterheide and Hallerbos. Sometimes small and nice, sometimes vast and large, but always exceptionally rich in animals and plants.

“A walk in these areas is always a good idea,” says deputy Bart Nevens. “But how nice is it if you can name that one rare plant? Can you recognize the song of the yellowhammer on the Kesterheide? Or know that you should not be afraid of that grass snake in Meldertbos?”

Online platform and app

Information about the 10 nature reserves can be found via the online platform ‘Buur Natuur’.
On the website, visitors will find a digital map with these areas on which they can click for more information. But there is more: via an app on the smartphone, people receive notifications at certain places during walks through the areas. Every time you walk past one of the strategically placed Bluetooth points, you receive interesting facts on your smartphone via transmitters and discover the animals and plants around the corner.

“In this way, Flemish Brabanders unravel surprising natural secrets and get to know their cherished neighbors, such as the wonderful fire salamander or the colorful bluethroat. Going out in a nearby nature reserve has never been so much fun,” concludes deputy Bart Nevens.
