The police in the Turnhout region, together with the Flemish tax authorities and customs, carried out a traffic check on the Steenweg on Merksplas in Turnhout on Saturday.

Of the 725 drivers checked, seven had drunk too much and five tested positive for drug use. In addition, nine drivers were not wearing their seat belts, the police drew up two reports for driver’s license tourism and a driver without a driver’s license also received a citation. There was a passenger in the back of one vehicle, and the person did not have an identity card in his pocket. A driver who transported four small children without a child seat in the back seat had to immediately pay a fine. The technical inspection of three vehicles was not in order. Two foreign vehicles and a trailer turned out not to be registered.

Vlabel inspectors collected 1,955 euros in overdue road tax. They also intercepted twelve vehicles for which there was still an outstanding fine for tax fraud, worth a total amount of almost 7,700 euros. Customs scanned 4,250 vehicles. Some of them drove with red diesel in the fuel tank. A total of 2,561 euros in outstanding traffic fines or unpaid fines was collected. (Ram)
