82-year-old man receives prison sentence for assault in nursing home: “He silenced victim with expensive perfume” (Ravels)

The criminal court in Turnhout has imposed a two-year prison sentence on an 82-year-old man because he had sexually assaulted a fellow resident.

It was June 10, 2023 when the director of the Onze Lieve Vrouw der Kempen residential care center (WZC) in Ravels reported the incident to the police. The 82-year-old JVG, a resident, is said to have sexually assaulted a female fellow resident in the WZC, who was 39 years old at the time. The management therefore imposed a contact ban and informed the woman’s family.

Three days later, the victim’s father filed a complaint with the police. He stated that his daughter suffers from a serious muscular disease and was therefore in the WZC. “The father stated that his daughter has been receiving visits from the defendant in her room for quite some time,” the court heard. “He allegedly performed unwanted sexual acts on his daughter, ranging from forcibly kissing the victim to unsolicited groping of her breasts.”

JVG, who is in a wheelchair, drove to the victim’s bed to kiss and fondle her. “Due to her illness, the victim was unable to make a statement herself,” the court clarified.

In a statement later made by the victim’s parents, they stated that the 82-year-old man silenced their daughter several times by giving her an expensive perfume for her birthday.

Last Wednesday the court in Turnhout pronounced the verdict. JVG is given a suspended prison sentence of two years. In addition, the court also imposed a contact ban on him with the victim and her parents, and he will have to pay compensation of 8,500 euros.
