For the upcoming elections on June 9, 2024, more than 400 Limburgers have registered to voluntarily sit as an assessor. Their job? Ensure that voting at their polling station runs smoothly. Depending on the method of voting, on paper or electronically, they receive a different compensation. The polling stations where paper voting is still required are mainly located in the south-west of Limburg.

Attendants receive a fixed fee. This therefore depends on the type of polling station. In an electronic polling station, an assistant receives 37.50 euros. At a polling station where voting is still done on paper, this is 25 euros. “The compensation is higher at electronic polling stations because they remain open until 4 p.m., while the stations that still work with paper close at 2 p.m. The law provides that the compensation in offices that stay open longer must be 50 percent higher,” says Koen Schuyten, spokesperson for the Interior. In Limburg, one in three municipalities – 14 out of 42 – still votes with pencil and paper. These municipalities are located in the southwest of our province.
