The man involved was unable to pay the amount of 6,238,607 euros, which caused the police to confiscate his vehicle, the local police zone Limburg Region Capital (LRH) confirmed on Wednesday evening. However, on Thursday morning it sounded like there may have been a mistake.

But after investigation by the FPS Finance and Justice, the amount appears to be correct. An inspection by the FPS Justice shows that this concerns a confiscation after a lawsuit. “An outstanding fine of 6.2 million euros is not an everyday occurrence. That is why it initially seemed to be a mistake,” says Francis Adyns of the Federal Public Service Justice.

The checks took place on the N80 in Hasselt towards Sint-Truiden and then in Alken towards Hasselt. In addition to the Limburg Capital Region police, the Sint-Truiden-Gingelom-Nieuwerkerken police zone, the Kanton Borgloon police zone and the Limburg road police took part.

In addition to the man with the outstanding sample fine, officials from Customs and Excise and the Flemish tax authorities (Vlabel) collected an amount of more than 18,000 euros for driving red diesel, uninspected and unregistered vehicles and fines. Seven cars were towed.

Thirteen people were driving under the influence of drugs. Their driver’s license was immediately revoked. Three people did not have a valid driver’s license. One was given a lifelong driving ban. Furthermore, three drivers were caught using mobile phones behind the wheel.
