The non-profit organization Donorkinderen already received sixteen reports last week after the news about the Brussels fertility doctor who involuntarily used sperm from students to conceive donor children. The organization also hopes to soon sit down with the VUB and the UZ Brussels.
Last week it became known that fertility doctor RS, then affiliated with the UZ Brussels and professor at the VUB, had fathered at least two donor children by using sperm without permission from a man who had donated sperm under the guise of scientific research. The doctor is also said to have actively recruited sperm donors during his lessons.
The case came to light by chance after a 45-year-old Limburger searched for his biological father through a DNA database and found him there. The non-profit organization Donorkinderen feared that this case was just the tip of the iceberg and launched an appeal to former students and former patients of the fertility doctor.

“Separate from each other”
In one week, sixteen reports have already been received by the non-profit organization Donorkinderen, it was said on Thursday. “Among them are five men who separately confirmed that they donated sperm after a call to participate in scientific research,” said chairman Steph Raeymaekers. “The periods of these donations are between 1975 and 1986, the locations are the private practice of fertility doctor RS, but the Brussels UMC Sint-Pieter was also mentioned.”

Furthermore, a man who had actually donated for donor conception and indicated that he wanted to be findable for his biological offspring also came forward. The non-profit organization was also contacted by a woman who had donated eggs for a friend at the AZ Jan Portaels in early 2000 and was guided by RS. The woman now wonders whether the surplus of her eggs may have been used to father children. Six adult donor children have also contacted us, some of whom are considering starting the search for the biological parent.
The non-profit organization Donorkinderen has now also contacted the VUB and the UZ Brussels with the request to sit around the table. “We obviously hope that this new scandal involves as few victims as possible, but we also take into account that more cases will come to light,” said Steph Raeymaekers.
