This year, the tax authorities will complete four million tax returns in advance

This year, the tax authorities will send out four million simplified tax return proposals, 150,000 more than a year ago. The number of codes will decrease by ten, the Federal Public Service Finance announced on Wednesday when the new declaration was presented.

As of today, the new declaration for the annual tax homework is available online via Tax-on-Web. For Flanders there are 833 codes, or ten fewer than for the 2023 personal tax return, according to Wouter De Ryck, Administrator General of Taxation.

New to the tax letter this year is, among other things, the purchasing power premium, which is exempt from taxes up to 750 euros. De facto separated persons now have the option to each submit a separate tax return. Because the income remains taxed jointly in the year of the divorce, the tax authorities subsequently combine the returns to calculate the taxes.

The number of proposals for simplified declarations increases to four million. For example, the VVA has been extended to people with childcare costs. The childcare organization must have sent the information to the tax authorities in a timely manner. From now on, a VVA for deceased persons is also possible.

Furthermore, from now on a mandatory addition for rent has been deducted as a professional expense and a mandatory addition in the context of the Cayman tax, the tax on income through legal constructions.

There will be no changes to the terms. The paper tax return must be submitted to the tax authorities by June 30 at the latest. There is time until July 15 via Tax-on-Web. Those who have special income have until October 16. This is the case with income from self-employed persons on foreign professional income.

Minister of Finance Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V) took the opportunity to once again argue for a thorough tax reform. The next government must work on this.
